Are you a fan of travel guide books? I am. I read them cover to cover or at least the parts that I am going to tour. I have quite a collection.
My husband started collecting old Baedeker’s guides. We found the first one in London on Portobello Road at an antique booth. It became a treasure hunt for the rest of our trip. The pictures show some of our collection. I’ve even used some for research. Right now, I’m enjoying the one on Switzerland.
I purchase a travel guide book before any trip. It doesn’t matter whether it is Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, DK Eyewitness, or another one. I highlight, sticky notes, dog ear, bookmark—anything so that I can access my information.
Here are a few reasons I use guidebooks:
- Maps
- Itineraries
- Restaurants
- History
- Walking tours
- Transportation
- Travel tips
- Money
- Cultural Customs
- And much more
My current guides are 1) Montréal and Québec City and 2) Cruise Ports in the Mediterranean.
Happy Traveling. Share a guidebook that you enjoyed.
I love travel guide books. I own more than I can count having spent 40+ years in the travel industry plus being a military brat!
That is so true! Do you ever use them for research?
Our favorite travel guide book is from Singapore. We lived there for many years and it came in very helpful for sightseeing and finding our way around.
I love the DK travel guides. I’ve used the one for London several times.
I have some old Baedeker’s too! Published just after WWI about the WWI battlefields in France.
This is an exciting post! I have two trips coming up and am using guidebooks to prepare! First is Boston – I borrowed your guidebook (likely used for the Revolutionary Faith Series research?) and I will be getting a Montreal/Quebec guidebook soon for our trip!
