Memorial Day has become very special to me. Since I’ve been a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), I have appreciated the role of remembering all those who fought for my freedom. I’m thankful for them and the ones who continue to face the barriers of war and freedom.
Also, I am now on the board of our town cemetery. I am found that a very rewarding position. Even without that role, I enjoy spending time in the small cemetery upkeeping the sites, finding missing graves, and placing flags twice a year on the veterans’ tombstones.
We have 39 veterans (that I know of for sure) in our cemetery.
They fought in the Civil War (2), WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
They served in Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Calvary.
One is buried in France and one in North Carolina.
They had many positions including the obvious ones of Captain, Sergeant, Colonel, Private. But here are some other roles: Storekeeper, Medical Clearing Co, Field Hospital, Engineer, Cook.
I’m proud to support our heroes and heroines even in this small way.
Spend some time thinking of the ones you know who have served our country so well.
Thank you, servicemen and servicewomen! God Bless You!
