Happy Mothering Day!

A bouquet for you!

Happy Mothering Day, this Sunday March 22! This is a UK celebration of mothers and those who play that role, equivalent to our Mother’s Day in May. So, this year I’m going to bring a little cheer to the beginning of this Spring season, cheer amidst the uncertainty. Perhaps, you can find a way to celebrate a woman in your life–a mother, a friend, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother. I like the sound of “Mothering Day.”

When I lived in England, Mothering Day was celebrated, and I experienced my first taste of the celebration. Years later, while traveling in England in March, the tradition popped up again when I saw cards, candy, flowers, and posters advertising the important remembrance of mothers.

IMG_3715The origin of Mothering Sunday began in the Middle Ages. It appears that children who didn’t live with their families because of work in domestic service were allowed to return to their home church or “mother church.” At first it had no ties to maternal relationships.  Through time the custom changed to encompass a spring occasion for families to come together. Children picked flowers as a gift for their mothers. Each year it falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, three weeks before Easter.

Blessings to you and yours on this Mothering Sunday! May you find reasons to celebrate!  IMG_3811

Happy Mothering Day! How beautiful, I enjoyed reading about the history of the celebration. I will pick flowers for you on Sunday! Your jonquils of different colors are so beautiful! I will plant some for next year to feel closer to you.
