The one thing that has not changed this year is my baking and eating. I’m not talking about the turkey or ham or casseroles. More like cookies, cakes, and plain old junk food. I just can’t help it.
For years I have made tins of Louisiana trash—what most people call chex mix—as gifts for friends and family with a nice portion for my own house. I love the mixture of nuts, cereal, oyster crackers, cheese crackers, and pretzels. Baked in butter, Worcestershire sauce, and seasoned salt for two hours. Yummy! I’m going for another handful now.
The other item that I bake many times during the Christmas season is sugar cookies, decorated in all the season colors. My grandmother’s recipe is swirled with sweetened condensed milk making it scrumptious. I take these cookies everywhere, needing to get them out of the house away from our greedy fingers.
Other favorites to spice up our palates are hot apple cider and gingerbread cookies.
What do you bake during the Holidays, every year no matter what?
Would you mind sharing your Louisiana Trash and grandma’s sugar cookie recipes?
Thanks much! Kathy

Other than the year I was in a nursing home through Christmas I always make cinnamon rolls. It is my family’s traditional Christmas morning breakfast. I generally deliver them to the individual households after the Christmas Eve Service at church to those of us still living in the area or visiting for the celebration. Through the years so many in our family have passed or moved away but this is a way I have been blessed to continue to share the one thing my Momma and our neighbor started when my sister and I were very young.
My Grandmother’s pumpkin bread and seven layer cookies.
My students give me cakes and cookies as gifts every year, always a treat. Your cookies are the best, though!!! Can’t wait to have some!
I just made some gingerbread too. I’ll share on Monday!
