Peru and Back

Buenos Dias, mis amigos! My husband and I traveled to Peru recently on a dream trip. Machu Picchu has been on my list of must experience for over twenty years. Every year in my Spanish classroom, I’d show videos (yes, DVDs and actual videos) to each class. So, in a week I’d view Peru and Hiram Bingham 4-5 times. I fell in love.

We tried to go in 2020, but the trip was cancelled. I couldn’t let the dream go, so we scheduled it for March 2022. When I say it was awesome, I mean fantastic, marvelous, inspiring, wonderful, and more than I imagined.

I was able to walk a bit of the Inca Trail through Machu Picchu. I learned so much history (a true love of mine) as I heard stories of the Incas and their kingdom, of the Spanish conquerors, and of the disappearance of the mountain top city of Machu Picchu into the clouds and jungle.

In 1911 Hiram Bingham discovered the overgrown city with the help of an eight-year-old “tour” guide. Since then, archeologists have uncovered the massive stones of temples, houses, storage rooms. It is now a World Heritage Site.

It is the home of about 20 llamas who are protected, it seems, by the park since the species is a favorite delicacy for the pumas.

I promise the experience in one of God’s most spectacular vistas was worth the wait, the strenuous steps, and every penny.

The rest must be expressed in pictures. Enjoy a piece of my journey.
